Adopting a
Basset Hound is a long term commitment. Most rescue dogs are available
because people have not planned accordingly. A Basset Hound's life
expectancy is 10-14 years. During this time, you will be countlessly
challenged with this breed's reluctance to be governed. But, if you ask
any Basset owner, they will all agree the happiest time in their lives
is time spent with their furry companion (commonly referred to as
"kid"). The way a Basset Hound interacts with their owners
inspires them to appreciate the simple things in life.
The estimated cost of adoption runs $100-150
pending on which rescue
organization you choose.
Getting
to know the breed: Make sure you are familiar with the breed before you
consider adoption. It would be cruel and unusual punishment for the dog
to be adopted out & then recovered due to the
“I just had no idea…”syndrome. It is in everyone's better interest
to find a permanent home as quickly as possible. Ask your rescue
organization if you can have brief visitations in the dogs foster environment.
Most rescue dogs warm up fast. But, there are people who
have abused their animal. It could take some time for the basset to
relax. Remember, the dog and the rescue counselors have been through an
emotional experience. The adoption process takes time. But, the reward
of your new companion is irreplaceable. Here are a few
personality traits reviewed by:
The American Kennel Club.
